Artist DesсriрtionMy Chemical Romance, which currently consists of band members Gerard Way (Vocals), Mikey Way (Bass), Frank Iero (Guitar), Ray Toro (Guitar), and Bob Bryar (Drums), is an American band from Belleville and Newark, New Jersey (except drummer Bob Bryar, who is from Chicago, Illinois).
The band was formed by frontman Gerard Way and ex-drummer Matt Pelissier. The first song they wrote was "Skylines and Turnstiles". Shortly after, guitarist Ray Toro joined, followed by Gerard's brother Mikey Way on bass and guitarist Frank Iero, who was previously in the band Pencey Prep. Bassist Mikey Way coined the band's name from a book entitled Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance by Irvine Welsh.
The genre of music that the band plays is highly debated, with opinions ranging anywhere from punk to emo. The band members themselves don't like their music being labelled emo because, as Gerard Way puts it, "When we were still unknown we would have been happy if our music would have been considered emo, because it would have helped us to get the chance to play gigs. But those people did not like our music. And now that we are succesful, people would like to call our music emo, but we don't want to have anything to do with them anymore".
The band cites their influences from other groups such as Thursday, Queen, Iron Maiden, The Smiths, Pixies, The Cure, Thrice, and Misfits. Bassist Mikey Way coined the band's name from a book entitled Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance by Irvine Welsh.
They recorded their first album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love which was released with Eyeball Records and produced by Geoff Rickly of Thursday. Gerard had written a short story with the title of the album which kind of inspired him.
After the release, they toured with bands such as The Used, Thrice, and Taking Back Sunday.
2004 saw the release of their second album and major label debut Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge which would go platinum a year later. The album contained the singles "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)", "Helena", and their third single from the album, "The Ghost of You".
Since the release, they have underlined the Vans Warped Tour in 2004, headlined the first ever Taste of Chaos and they also were the opening act for Green Day on their American Idiot tour. In 2005, they headlined the Vans Warped Tour 2005 and did their first ever headlining tour with Alkaline Trio.
On March 21, 2006, My Chemical Romance released their DVD entitled Life on the Murder Scene. The 2-DVD and CD package includes their diary from day one until now, live performances, and a previously unreleased song titled "Desert Song".
The first single "Welcome to the Black Parade" for their next album The Black Parade was performed in the VMA's 2006 preshow and on October 15, 2006 went to the number one position of the UK singles chart and held for two weeks. My Chemical Romance had already performed some songs from the next record in the Hammersmith Palais in London. For this next record, My Chemical Romance has chosen to follow the lead of David Bowie, who years ago created an alter-ego named Ziggy Stardust, by creating their own alter-ego: The Black Parade.
The Black Parade is the the bands third studio album. It was released on October 17, 2006 in Puerto Rico; October 19, 2006 in Ireland; October 20, 2006 in Germany; October 23, 2006 internationally; and October 24, 2006 in the United States. Like the band's first two albums, it is a concept album, centering around a character known as "the Patient," who suffers an untimely death at a young age due to cancer. The album is produced by Rob Cavallo, who has produced every Green Day album since 1994 except Warning:. The album was intentionally leaked in its entirety on October 19. In an interview with MTV, the band said that the name "The Black Parade" was chosen due to a belief that death comes to individuals as their most powerful memory. The main character in the concept went to a parade with his father at a young age, therefore death comes to him as a "Black Parade".Gerard cut and dyed his hair as a form of 'method acting'. He wanted to take on the persona of the patient, which is the character from the third album. However, all of the band have changed their image. Their latest release 'Famous Last Words' attracted a more traditional rock audience, and veered away from the hated tag 'emo'. In the video Bob Bryar Burns his leg after the fire behind them goes out of control.
My Chemical Romance has an odd yet visible mystique. It is a tortured, blackly funny pop-punk band with a death fetish and a taste for bulletproof vests and marching-band uniforms. It takes its flamboyant theatricality from 70’s glam rock, its ghoulish style from the 80’s goth scene and its sense of generational affliction from 90’s grunge. But the result is a darkly contemporary vision that has inspired a cultish army of young, raw-nerved kids.
As of Tuesday 30th January, It has been revealed that MCR are headlining the Main Stage of Download festival in England, playing on the friday. the other two headliners for sat and sun respectively) are Linkin Park and Iron Maiden.
